Synopsis :

A connection with other galaxies even before “Star Wars” came into being; a love story that is out of this world …

Tang monk TRIPITAKA (Nicholas Tse) and his three disciples – Monkey king SUN WUKONG (Chen Bo-lin), Pig monk ZHU WUNENG (Kenny Kwan), and Sand monk SHA WUJING (Steven Cheung) arrive triumphantly to a hero’s welcome in Shache city. Little do they know that ahead of them lays Tripitaka’s most arduous challenge before he achieves deification … and it is a test that he and only he alone can overcome.

During their stay in the city, the three disciples are captured by the evil Tree Spirits. Tripitaka borrows the Golden Pole and tries to find a way to save them. He meets a young lizard imp MEIYAN (Charlene Choi) who is more than a visual match for Quasimodo: matted bushy hair, and the teeth of any dentist’s nightmare. Meiyan falls in love with Tripitaka at first sight and devotes herself to trailing him. She even sets a love trap to ensnare him. Tripitaka unwittingly falls into the trap and, in the process, breaks the Heavenly Code.

The region is one full of monsters, strange beings and creatures of unknown origins and among them are the beautiful PRINCESS XIAOSHAN (Fan Bing-bing) and her army. On a passing journey to Earth, her path crosses Tripitaka’s and she vows her aid. Tripitaka decides to leave with the Princess.

Meiyan is heartbroken. She picks a fight with Princess Xiaoshan and, although she loses, she finally discovers her own identity as a galactic warrior. She eventually helps the Princess in defeating the enemy and rescues Tripitaka and his disciples.

After the battle, Meiyan surrenders to the Temple of Heaven for judgment. Torn between passion and righteousness, Tripitaka rebels against the heavens to rescue the gallows-bound Meiyan. A benevolent Buddha is moved and pardons the two, on condition that they embark on a journey to the west to accomplish the Eighty-One Tasks to redeem themselves as well as to save the world.

The Characters:

Tang Monk, Tripitaka (Nicholas Tse)

Defying the general definition of a monk, Tripitaka not only is able to sing and dance well, his innocent and boyish good looks makes him a magnet for the girls both of the human and other-earthly world. His only drawback is his love for boring, longwinded philosophical discussions. Entangled with a lizard imp, his sense of righteousness leads him to rebel against the heavens. Unable to escape his fate, he embarks on his journey to collect the sutras from the west.

Devoted galactic trash, Yue Meiyan (Charlene Choi)

The victim of a mouth ulcer that has caused her severe dental problems, the lizard imp with a heart of gold has convinced herself that Tripitaka returns her love and devotion. She throws herself into the path of danger, risking life and limb, to save the Tang monk time and again. She eventually transforms into a special being …

Sun Wukong (Chen Bo-lin)

A great fighter but whose uncoordinated actions and words often give rise to laughs, Sun Wukong is chosen by the heavens to be part of band that sets out to regain the sutras from the west. Initially, the arrogant Monkey is scornful of Tripitaka’s effeminate ways and refuses to acknowledge him as master. But after several life-threatening situations, he gains a newfound respect for the Tang monk.

Pig monk and second disciple, Zhu Wuneng (Kenny Kwan)

Handsome and fair, this slimmed down pig is the handsome version of the classic Pig monk. He retains his beer belly and a highly flexible pig’s snout. Innocent and pure of heart, Pig follows his master without question or doubt on his journey to the west, and is an obedient follower to first disciple, Sun Wukong.

Fiery, wild, Red Child (Isabella Leong)

The Red Child was an intelligent, lively street urchin until a betrayal by friends brings forth the hidden fires and craziness from hidden depths. On the surface, she appears to want to help Tripitaka and Meiyan fight the Tree Evils but in actuality, she is ready to sink her fangs into the Tang monk. Unfortunately, before the fight even reaches the Tree Evils, she is defeated by the galactic forces.

Inter-galactic runaway, Princess Xiaoshan (Fan Bing-bing)

The regal, elegant and beautiful Princess Xiaoshan was forced to cross the galaxies to avoid an arranged marriage. Fate leads her to meet Tripitaka on Earth. She vows to help the Tang monk rescue his three disciples, and unleashes a war between her galactic forces and the monsters.
